Here’s my presentation to the 2020 Trustee Exchange online conference:
I spoke about a couple of OR projects done for charities; the first being a pro bono project done by a team from DECC for the RSPCA. This project developed a stocks and flows model for understanding the UK dog population and it was used to help inform campaigns to improve canine welfare in the UK, including puppy smuggling and pet-vending legislation. The second project I presented was done for Dachshund Health UK, a charity for which I am a trustee. Pro Bono OR volunteer Sophie Carr developed a probability-tree model to help estimate the risks of Lafora Disease (a form of epilepsy) in Miniature Wirehaired Dachshunds. The Excel tool was used to help inform communication campaigns for breeders and puppy buyers. It contributed to a strategy which resulted in “at risk” litters reducing from 55% in 2012 to less than 5% by the start of 2020.
