Lead and Lag Indicators. What they are and what they mean for Third Sector organisations.

One of the interesting conversations I had at the recent Data4Good Conference was on performance management. We were discussing the need for a set of performance indicators that a charity could use to get early warnings of performance issues as well as being able to track outcomes and impacts. One of the participants said she had not heard of Leading and Lagging Indicators, 2 terms that I used.

My Slideshare presentation (below) explains the principles of Lead and Lag.

I’ve also written a paper on Lead and Lag Indicators based on the OpenStrategies PRUB Model (pdf). Third Sector organisations will recognise the similarities between the PRUB model and Theories of Change.
