Collaborative Planning with a Visual Look-ahead Plan

I’ve been facilitating some project management workshops with a client whose office is currently undergoing a major refurbishment programme. We talk about the different time horizons that need to be considered when planning a project.

Thanks to the client’s Project Manager, I had the opportunity to visit the project office being run by BW, the contractor running the refurb project, and was pleased to see their Look-ahead Plan which covers most of one wall. It’s a great example of visual management and is also the focal point for daily stand-up meetings where the team can plan the current day’s work. The image below is part of that plan (which actually covers 6 weeks).

I was also impressed to read BW’s website where their commitment is to deliver every project “defect-free” at practical completion.

I thought this was a great example of how to apply collaborative planning to a complicated project, using tools that I cover in my project workshops.
