A new version of the American Productivity & Quality Center (APQC) Process Classification Framework (PCF)® is now available: Version 7.2.0 went live last week. The PCF is the most widely downloaded framework in the world and helps organisations create a common language to communicate and define work processes comprehensively.
This version of the PCF is a minor update which includes the addition of business model and data analytics process groups, as well as an overhaul of the Information Technology (IT) category.
APQC’s PCF was developed in the early 1990s by APQC and a group of members from a number of industries and countries throughout the world. Originally envisioned as a tool to help with performance improvement projects, the framework evolved into the broad taxonomy that it is today. Organisations can use the PCF’s common terminology to name, organise, and map their processes. It is also helpful as a tool for explaining a business in terms of horizontal processes rather than vertical functions.
It is designed as a framework and global standard to be customized for use in any organisation. The PCF does not list all processes within a specific organisation and every process listed in the framework does not exist in all organisations.
I’ve found it to be a useful starting point when helping clients define their business processes as it’s a great checklist for what might need to be included. Being a hierarchical model, it’s ideal for use with my preferred process management software, elements.
