I had a lovely surprise in today’s post, a Certificate recognising my 30 years as a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Actually, it was the Institute of Personnel Management when I joined, but that’s a bit academic, really.
It’s hard to believe it was 30 years ago that I began my IPM day-release course at Slough College (now Thames Valley University). In those days, the course had 3 learning streams:
- Learning and Development (my favourite and still what I love doing)
- Industrial Relations (tedious)
I can still remember some of the truly awful lecturers we had (who basically read a chapter out of an obsolete book, each week) and some of the great ones (who came from the world of business and brought real-world experience). I also remember being something of an oddity in our class as I was one of the few people who enjoyed both the Statistics and Business Finance modules.
