Project Management, Viewpoint!

How confident are you in your Project Plan?

As I was coming home recently on the A40, I passed a new McDonalds construction site and a sign that said: “Your new McDonalds will be opening at 10:30 on 28th June“. That sign has been there for at least the past 2 months. What a stark contrast with the signs we see on many major construction projects: “Bypass opening Autumn 2017“.

What’s going on? Is this a feature of the difference between private and public sector projects? There’s clearly a commercial imperative for private sector retail projects to open on time. Every day’s delay in opening is a loss of revenue. Maybe the public sector projects are trying to manage people’s expectations by saying “Autumn“.

Frankly, as a tax-paying citizen, I am dismayed and annoyed to be advised that a project will be completed within a 3-month time window.  I’m not impressed to know that I might be crawling through a 50 m.p.h. zone of traffic cones, with no sign of anyone leaning on a shovel, for an extra 13 weeks. Presumably, there is a Gantt Chart that shows exactly when the new bypass will be opening.

Being cynical, with Climate Change, do we even know what “Autumn” means anymore?
