Freedom of speech, tolerance of others’ views and the Orwell Lecture 2016

I was reading a newspaper article today about Laura Kuenssberg who has just been named “Journalist of the Year“, here in the UK. I hadn’t realised there have been petitions calling for her to be sacked because some people on the Left didn’t like her perceived criticism of Jeremy Corbin’s shadow cabinet.

The article led me to this YouTube video of Ian Hislop giving the 2016 Orwell Lecture. If you’ve got 45 minutes to spare (!) it’s well worth watching. It’s an amusing and interesting talk about George Orwell’s writings on dissent, freedom of speech and the freedom of the press. Hislop also talks about the “post-truth” world where there appears to be an increasing intolerance for people with opposing views. Internet trolls are a manifestation of this, he says. If you read Private Eye or watch “Have I got news for you”, you will enjoy this video.
