Creativity Killers or Creativity Growers?

I’ve been running some workshop sessions on creativity and innovation over the past couple of months and, in one of the group-work sessions, I challenge people to come up with a list of “Creativity Growers”.  These are the words and phrases that leaders can use to encourage and support their team members to be innovative.  They are the antidote to Creativity Killers such as:

  • “With all due respect”
  • “It’s not in the budget”
  • “Brian wouldn’t like it”
  • “Write me a paper on that”
  • “We tried that before”

The record is around 50. The groups that come up with the most ideas usually make use of sticky notes to capture their ideas.  Here’s a (partial) list from a recent workshop:

Trust your imagination
Let’s make time to talk about that
How can I help you develop that?
Why don’t we?
OK, where do we need to break down the barriers?
What resources Can I give you?
Break the rules and write new ones
The boss will love that
What are the next steps
Why do we do it today, like we did it yesterday?
What support do you need?
We should share this with…
Tell me more
Can we do it quicker?
Do you need me to… unblock, persuade, fund?
What do you need from me?
Joe would find it really helpful
Do it!
Can you present that at our team meeting?
That’s a good idea, let’s talk to the boss
Can we develop it further?
Brian could really help you with that
F***ing great!
Let’s try and capture that
Have we thought about…?
Let’s try it
Can you team up with…?
Let’s give it a whirl
Why don’t we?
Do you need time to…?
Great idea!
