Shake up your company – a tutorial by Gary Hamel on BBC iPlayer Radio

Shake Up Your Company: That’s the message from one of the USA’s (and the world’s) best known management gurus, Gary Hamel. It’s not a message aimed just at the bosses, but at the workers too. Every few years BBC World Service’s Global Business drops in on Professor Hamel to sample the sort of tutorial he gives his clients and business school students and this week Peter Day presents the latest of these encounters (BBC iPlayer Radio).

In the tutorial he describes:

  •  “the inability of 20th century organisations to evolve to meet the needs of the 21st century”
  •  “the failure of centralised architectures”
  •  “a world without managers”
  • Low staff engagement caused by “learned helplessness”Final statement:
  • “we are currently reinventing the technology of human coordination
and collaboration  . . . creating organisations fit for human beings.  An
    exciting challenge.”
