How do I develop a set of KPIs

I was asked by a client this week how to go about developing a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for a specific team.  I’ve written numerous blog posts about performance measurement and there are several relevant articles in the Shared Knowledge areas of my Blog.

My advice is: “Decide what you’re trying to achieve, then decide what you need to measure”.  Don’t start by dreaming up a list of everything you could measure.

The most relevant articles on my blog are:

Identifying Measurements with a Balanced Scorecard

Lead and Lag Indicators

Process Measurement

Finally, I was reminded of three “golden rules of measurement”:

  • No measurement without recording
  • No recording without analysis
  • No analysis without action
